In 1990, Byron Zerphy, founder and president of Solar Technology Inc., had an idea. He saw that advanced-warning arrow boards used in highway construction zones used fuel-consuming internal combustion engines to operate. In addition to requiring constant refueling, internal combustion engines need frequent maintenance and are noisy, dirty, and pollute the environment.
He knew that he could innovate a better product. He could develop equipment powered by a technologically-advanced solar energy system that would require no fuel, no maintenance, and would be quiet and clean.
So he went to work in the garage of his rented house in Allentown, PA and with the help and support of his wife, Diane, Solar Technology, Inc. was born. Drawing on his electrical engineering and computer science background, Byron designed and built the world’s first arrow board that derived 100% of its energy requirements from the sun.
Nearly two decades later, solar power is the industry standard for running portable traffic control equipment.
Over the years, SolarTech has continued to lead the industry in technology advances. From the first full-matrix LED signs in 1998 to our newest Mega-Tech touch-screen controller. We are committed to the mission of innovative product design and advanced manufacturing techniques that continually increase the value added to the products we produce and the services we provide. Byron wouldn’t have it any other way…
